Essential Tips and Tricks for Warhammer 40K: Boltgun
A practical overview for anyone who wants to master the frantic gameplay style inspired by classic shooters. The video reveals eleven essential things we wish we'd known from the very first minute in the Warhammer universe.
How do you charge Malum's Obliterating Charge?
By holding down the charge button instead of releasing it right away, Malum builds up power: both the distance covered and the damage dealt scale with how long you charge it. Useful against large groups of Chaos enemies, where crossing the whole formation with a single hit is worth more than three separate lunges.
Slow down time to throw grenades with precision
Malum's grenades follow the same mechanic as Nyra's Melta Bomb: holding the throw button while priming it slows down time, letting you line up the trajectory calmly. Pressing the button again after the throw detonates the grenade early, great for popping it mid-air over a group of enemies instead of waiting for it to hit the ground.
Use the chainsword lunge to move around, not just to attack
Holding the melee attack against an enemy just out of reach makes Malum perform a forward lunge with the chainsword that deals increased damage and covers the screen in gore. The move also doubles as a mobility tool, something Nyra doesn't have: you can use it to quickly close the distance to a group of enemies or to get around a level without relying only on running.
Look for destructible ice walls in the snowy levels
In the snow-themed areas, some ice walls are destructible and hide secrets inside. Certain ice sheets built into the ground are also worth actively investigating: this chapter's level design rewards players who stop to check every suspicious surface instead of sprinting straight to the next objective.
Make the most of Malum's regeneration during clean-up phases
Unlike in the previous game, Malum now has a regeneration ability that kicks in while you're mopping up the enemies left after the main fight. There's no need to save your healing for the next wave: using it actively during a room's clean-up recovers health without wasting more valuable resources.
