All story missions, except random encounters, can only be played once. If you miss an optional objective there's no way to go back for it, so before closing out a battle read the objective list carefully and keep alive the enemies you need. Saving to a separate slot before the trickier maps costs nothing and spares you replaying half the campaign.
Hanks learns his steal ability at level 14, but to use it he needs at least 25 points in Mind: if you've only built him for attack and agility, it will stay locked. Each attempt costs 3 SP bars and doesn't always succeed, so don't wait until the last turn to try. Every character's growth screen lists the stat requirements for all skills, so check it before assigning points by hand.
Chapter 12's extra objective asks for an item you won't find on the ground: one of the enemy mages carries it in his backpack. Check the mages' inventories to see who has the cross, then send Hanks to steal it before taking him down. Remember the earlier rule: if the mage dies with the cross on him, the objective is lost for good.
Enemy mages hurt most with their area attacks. Falling back a few tiles forces them to move instead of casting, and they often end up wasting the turn. When enemies bunch up in a narrow corridor, Leonard's second skill can hit several of them at once. The archer, meanwhile, has a stun that comes in very handy when you need to hold a target without killing it, for example the mage with the cross.
Items that restore SP are sold in shops and cost quite a bit, but in the hardest battles they make the difference between winning and starting over. Players who have finished the game recommend carrying 8-10 per team before the big fights: with skills like Hanks's steal costing 3 bars at a time, they run out faster than you'd think.
The remake has multiple endings. Recruiting the secret character unlocks access to the third ending, reached in the swamp after fending off all the waves of enemies. To avoid missing it, the non-replayable missions rule applies here too: pay attention to dialogue choices during battles and to who you spare in the early skirmishes.
