Spica Adventure: full gameplay of the arcade version

Watch the full playthrough of Spica Adventure, Taito's platformer run on the Taito Type X arcade hardware. The footage shows the game in action via emulation with ArcadePC Loader, offering a perfect overview of the mechanics and style of this historic Japanese title.

How do you use the umbrella to climb walls?

Plant the tip of the umbrella into the wall: the shaft is flexible, and Nico uses its elasticity to propel himself up or down. The same gesture works on the ground, like a sort of pogo, and is used to reach hidden areas or to overwhelm a row of enemies if you get the timing right.

How do you slow down a fall?

By opening the umbrella, Nico descends more slowly and can ride the air currents. This often happens in sky levels, but the trick works wherever you need more time to land where you want.

Parrying and returning blows

Hold down the attack button: Nico remains in place, but you can move the umbrella in eight directions to parry and counterattack. With a complete combo, you launch enemies into the air and use them as projectiles against others.

Is it better to stay down or go up?

Going up is better. Those who climb avoid the toughest enemies and find some hidden rewards. There's also a reason for rushing: if the level's timer runs out, an evil robot arrives and the game ends there.

Which mode should I choose to start with?

Original Mode recreates the arcade experience in 4:3. Normal Mode switches to widescreen, optimizes the controls, and offers optional cheats, which, however, are only unlocked after collecting all the collectibles. Challenge Mode is for those who want to chase high scores. There are 28 levels, with the usual boss battles and alternative routes: after two stages and a boss, you choose where to go, and some stages are much harder than others.
