Press Z to undo your last move at any time, without having to restart the level from scratch. It's the fastest way to experiment with the color combinations available: try a solution, and if it doesn't work, just step back with one button and change strategy, instead of quitting and re-entering the level every time you get a tile wrong.
Colorbound includes a hint system that, once activated, reveals the correct order of colors needed to solve a puzzle. It's not something to avoid at all costs: several puzzles later in the game combine multiple color properties at once, and getting the order right on the first try saves quite a few wasted attempts.
Every color Anku picks up has a precise physical property: some make objects lighter and send them floating upward, others weigh them down and make them drop. Before painting a block to plug a gap or create a foothold, think about what that spot actually needs - an obstacle to send flying away, or a solid platform to bring down.
One of the game's less obvious tricks: paint an obstacle the same color as the background, and that obstacle stops affecting Anku - as one of the in-game hints puts it, "if you don't see it, it doesn't affect you." Especially useful in sections with hidden ledges: switching the background color can reveal platforms that seemed invisible a second earlier.
Colorbound's overworld alternates between forests, deserts and ruined cities, and hides optional secrets beyond the main path to each musician. Don't rush straight to the level's goal: backtrack with the color combinations you've already unlocked - an area that looked like a dead end often opens up the moment you're holding the right shade.
Behind the puzzles is a real journey: Anku, an Aymara boy, crosses lush forests and ruined cities to track down the scattered members of his recently deceased grandfather's band and convince them to play one last time in his honor. It's worth reading the dialogue and environment descriptions - developer Panpipe Studio drew heavily on Aymara culture and South American musical traditions to build the game's world, and it shows.
