This video offers an extended look at Over the Hill's game world, focusing on the off-road driving sections, solo or with friends. The footage shows how to tackle complex routes and chart your own course on the title's explorable map.
All vehicles are 4x4 with just two gears, low and high, and no locking differential. Low gear is slower but far more effective for climbing rocks and pushing through mud, while switching to high gear on the safer stretches of a route saves valuable time without risking getting stuck.
Every bit of damage worsens both the vehicle's looks and its actual on-road performance. Repair kits are limited in number, so it's better to save them for when the wear really starts affecting handling, not at the first dent, and remember you can also repair a friend's vehicle, not just your own.
When your vehicle gets stuck, and it will happen a lot, whether in a river, a peat bog or a muddy slope in the rain, the winch lets you pull yourself free, but only if there's a tree nearby to attach it to. Otherwise the only real way out is the fast-travel points marked by the cabins scattered across the map.
Scattered across the map are abandoned crates containing cosmetic parts for your vehicle: fenders, lights, roof racks with tents or kayaks, spare wheels, shovels. They don't affect performance, but thoroughly exploring every area to find them is essentially the game's real structural goal, more so than the timed challenges themselves.
Weather conditions and the day-night cycle genuinely change how passable the terrain is: a slope that's manageable during the day can turn slippery and dangerous in the rain. Before heading into a technical stretch it's worth checking current conditions, especially in multiplayer, where waiting for a teammate stuck in the mud costs the whole group time.
