A hacker takes down Secret Neighbor: he demands that Hello Neighbor disappear from every digital store

Hologryph and tinyBuild have temporarily shut down the multiplayer spin-off after someone with admin access erased players' progress and are threatening further attacks until the franchise is removed from sale.

p>Secret Neighbor, the multiplayer spin-off born from the 2017 horror game Hello Neighbor, has been offline for a few days. Not for maintenance: someone accessed the backend systems with administrator credentials and deleted player profiles and progression on all platforms.

Developer Hologryph and publisher tinyBuild are openly talking about a "coordinated attack" on their infrastructure. The most disturbing part, however, is the hacker's demand: to continue targeting the servers until Hello Neighbor and its spin-offs are withdrawn from sale everywhere, including PC and consoles.

The two companies assure that no personal user data has been touched, only game saves and statistics. Not much compared to a credit card theft, but enough to push them to shut down Secret Neighbor until the vulnerability that allowed access is closed. They haven't said when it will reopen, and honestly, it's hard to imagine it happening anytime soon: first, they need to understand the entry point and the true extent of the damage.

It remains to be seen whether a disgruntled former employee, a rival, or simply someone who hates the game is behind this story. The precedent is certainly dangerous: threatening to delete other people's saves to get something is a despicable tactic, but if it works even once, someone else will try it again.
