Capcom is bringing forward the release of its action-horror comeback set in a Malice-corrupted Edo Japan, starring Miyamoto Musashi – and the first hands-on demos look promising.
Capcom has moved the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword to September 4, 2026, three weeks earlier than the original release date of September 25. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
The story takes players to Edo-era Kyoto, shrouded in clouds of Malice, the dark corruption that has always driven the Onimusha series, starring Miyamoto Musashi as the protagonist.Capcom has chosen to stay true to the series' action-horror roots rather than give in to the temptation of souls-like gameplay, and from our first hands-on experience, it seems like a good choice: the combat offers more depth than expected, with parries, deflections, and dodges that reward timing more than simple button presses.
The August 6 trailer showed the fight against Rasho-gan, one of the most challenging bosses shown so far, and the demo was enriched with a second mission set in the Oni Hideout, with the gigantic Daidara awaiting those who venture there.We're not denying it: that mix of meticulously crafted scenarios, well-written villains, and a writing that apparently even makes you laugh at times, is quite intriguing.
First impressions from critics speak of a potential resuscitation of the series, with some already drawing comparisons with the best games of the year.We'll see if the full game lives up to the promise of the demo, but it seems like the right path.
