Introduction and Game Plot

Nintendogs: Best Friends is the Nintendo DS game where you look after a puppy, take them for walks, and participate in races. This page lists the ways to unlock the breeds at the kennel. You can unlock the Beagle with 16,000 owner points and the Dachshund with 50,000, or by playing Bark Mode with a friend who has Nintendogs: Dachshund & Friends and having them pass on a Dachshund.

Tricks and Tips

Resetting Your Data

After the Nintendo logo hold L + R + A + B + X + Y to delete saved data.

Connecting for New Breeds

You can connect with another DS only once and unlock only one breed: the one of your partner's dog, which must not be a breed you already have.

Easy Owner Points

Play with the disc, ball and so on. Every time the dog brings it back, call it (or tap the screen a couple of times). When it arrives, pet it on the head for a few seconds: it will glow and give you one or two points. It also makes it easier to get the toy back.

Easy Items (walks)

Take the dog for a walk with another accessory to swap and visit as many "?" squares as possible before the park. As soon as you enter the park, go straight home. You receive the items as usual up to the park, then go to "Accessories", change the accessory immediately and tap "Back": when "Saving! Do not turn off!" appears and the save is finished, turn off. When you turn it back on you will still have all the items and can take another walk. You don't earn owner points and the dog's stamina doesn't increase.

Easier Training

For commands use unique words, without repeating the individual words of one command in different commands, so the dog doesn't get confused.

More Tricks and Contests per Day

The dog learns a certain number of tricks per day, and there are limits for contests too. Change the system date to the previous day with the time 23:59, exit the menu, turn off the DS, turn it on again right away and load the game. After a minute a new day begins, with more tricks and more contests. At the end set the correct date and time again.

Making Money

Take frequent walks and collect as many question marks as possible, then sell the useless items at the second-hand shop. Before going out, feed and water the dog: it is easier to find gifts instead of junk. The gift is a white window with red ribbons: walk slowly, touch it with the stylus and the dog brings it to you. The tricolor ribbon is worth $10, the Moai statue about $100.

Secrets

  • Bowser's Kart: during the walk you can find it in a "?" box. B to go forward, A to go back, right or left to turn.
  • Mario's hat and Mario items: walk often: you'll find the Red Cap (wear it from "Accessories"), Luigi's cap, a rubber mushroom, the "?" block and a Mario music box (turn the crank with the stylus).
  • RC Helicopter: you can find it as a gift. D-Pad to steer, L to change the view; it sells for $200.
  • Secret recordings: there are 4, very rare. With the music icon in the supplies menu they play strange music.
  • What's in the "?" box: if the dog barks once it is a gift, twice it is another dog. If, when it runs off screen, it turns white, it is a trainer.
  • Raising more than three dogs: the Dog Hotel houses up to five, and the three you raise don't count: up to eight dogs.
  • Discs and fetch: after throwing a frisbee, a ball or a stick, tap the screen at least 5 times to get the dog's attention, then play tug of war. For fetch tap the screen until sparkles appear: over time the dog will do it on its own and the contests will be easier.
  • Agility training: at the gym, change it with each contest won. Obedience: repeat a trick until a message appears, give it a name; continue until it does it right away on the first call. The training limit is daily.
  • Dog hanging: pull the rope and let go; while the dog bites it, pull it quickly: either it lets go or it stays hanging.
  • Pikmin reference: in the pet shop there is a Pikmin on the top shelf.
