On 30 September Supermassive Games announced on X that Directive 8020 will get online multiplayer. It will arrive in October, just in time for Halloween celebrations, but there is no exact date.
Until now the game, released on 12 May 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series after a delay from October 2025, offered the Movie Night mode only locally: up to five people on the same couch deciding together the fate of the characters. Those without friends nearby had to give it up. Online co-op had been promised as a post-launch update, without a timeline.
Quite a few unknowns remain, and we don't want to fill them in with guesswork: the announcement doesn't say whether the update will be free, whether remote play will have different rules from local play, or on which platforms it launches. We'll wait for the details before giving an opinion.
The timing is curious. Supermassive suffered layoffs in July 2025 and in August 2026, and an update of this scale within a single month is a promise that has to be kept. A patch of fixes, including the missing legs bug, had already arrived on all platforms. Do you play it with company or alone?
