Introduction and Game Plot

Ghost of Yotei is the open-world adventure set in Ezo, present-day Hokkaido, three hundred years after Ghost of Tsushima. The journey unfolds among grasslands, snowy tundras and dangers that don't announce themselves, at the foot of Mount Yotei.

This page collects the tips and shortcuts the game doesn't explain: how to remove the black bars on horseback, recognize the strikes that can only be dodged, choose the right weapon against each enemy, recover spirit by tearing down a bounty poster and cook to get the best bonuses.

Besides the written tips there is a video trick with the hidden mechanics and the walkthrough.

At campfires choose fish: it gives stronger bonuses than mushrooms and charges your spirit for the current day of play. If the bonus that comes up doesn't convince you, leave the camp, re-enter and choose again before reloading the previous checkpoint.

How do you use the Bulwark stance with the Odachi?

Hold the heavy attack with the Odachi to block enemy attacks safely and quickly fill the opponent's stun bar.

Where do you fish in the rivers?

Look on the map for water spots with jumping fish. Strike with the Yari spear at the right moment and you catch three at a time, useful for bonuses and for some trophies.

What is the Shamisen for outside of fights?

Play it in the open world and the wind guides you toward the nearest item or activity. Choose different songs to look for exploration elements, vanity items or shrines, depending on the region you are in.

Complete the wolf dens to unlock and upgrade abilities such as the wolf assassination or battle support. Throw items or sake barrels to point out the enemies for it to attack and finish lethal combos.

With the Odachi unlock Unstoppable Strikes and Indomitable Counter. The gear lets you parry any incoming attack, including strikes with the red glow, and recovers part of the lost health.

Hold L1 to block normal attacks. A blue glow indicates a strike that can't be blocked and must be parried with L1 an instant before impact. The red glow can only be dodged, while the yellow one marks a heavy attack that prevents disarming.

Which weapon beats which enemy?

The game works like rock-paper-scissors: the katana beats the katana, the dual katana beats spears, the spear beats the kusarigama, the kusarigama beats shields and the odachi beats heavy enemies. Switch weapons according to the opponent instead of sticking to your favorite.

How do you find your way without a map?

Swipe up on the PS5 controller touchpad and a gust of wind points you in the direction of the tracked quest. Following the golden birds, instead, leads to special places. You have the horse from the start, and galloping through fields of white flowers gives a speed boost.

Tear down the bounty posters showing Atsu's face as Onryo: your spirit instantly fills completely. It is an emergency recovery useful mid-fight, when there is no time to stop at camp.

By completing it you get a collector that recovers loot and sells powerful talismans, including the Charm of Last Chance, which heals you once per fight when health drops to critical levels.
